The End of the Road

The unforeseen future.

Graduating seniors have reached a point in their life where the seemingly familiar question, “What do you want to be when you’re older,” begins to apply pressure more than hope.

For high school students, the future is a concept that is hard to decipher, and even harder to understand. What we want, what we ultimately pursue, and who we will become are unknown. We are constantly asked the same question throughout our childhood, and the stress and inevitable future loom over us. As we reflect and attempt to contemplate our journey, we wonder: what led us to where we are now? With each step we take, we set up our own path of struggles and self-defining challenges, but simultaneously building the trait of perseverance to keep us diligent in life.

This piece encapsulates the feelings of uncertainty, stress, and the vagueness of the future – our own future. Asking ourselves “Who will I become?” and growing into independence all the while learning about the world is a daunting task. The more we doubt, the more we’ll slip into despair and doubt our ability to impact the world. Therefore as we go forward, I wanted to encourage all of us – including myself – that towards the end of the road, no matter how “dark” and ambivalent it may seem, that we keep going.
